Lawn Aeration: What is the purpose?
Aeration is an essential lawn care practice, just like mowing and fertilization, for maintaining a beautiful and healthy lawn. This process involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, nutrients, and water to reach the roots. This process allows the grassroots to grow deeply and produce a stronger and ampler lawn
To start off, it is important to note what time of year aeration is necessary. In the state of Pennsylvania, most lawns have cool-season grass, which refers to the temperature when the grass grows the best; in this case that is 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Warm-season grass grows best in high temperatures, between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, which isn’t really the standard choice in PA.
If you have a cool-season grass species, such as Kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass, it is best to aerate the grass in the fall months, such as September and October. If you have a warm-season grass like a Zoysia grass, it is best to aerate in the springtime.
Another important thing to note is if your lawn is a good candidate for aeration. Here are four things to look for:
- Your lawn has heavy daily use (such as children and pets)
- The lawn was established as part of a newly constructed home.
- Dries out easily and has a spongy feel (excessive thatch)
- If your lawn was established by sod or soil layering.
These four signs could mean that your lawn is good candidate for aeration. If you really want to be sure that your lawn is a good candidate for aeration, A&N Lawn Service Inc. can be of great help. Contact us and one of our professionals can let you know if aeration is necessary. Let us help ensure your lawn is beautiful for the summer of 2020!
Summer is coming to an end, but that does not mean your garden has to. If you are looking to add new life to your Pittsburgh landscaping this fall, consider planting colorful perennials.
